1957: The first O.M.C. badge incorporated the traditional trademark of the magician – a white rabbit and a black top hat – and this was surrounded with the legend “Otago Magic Circle” in gold lettering against a bright blue background. The badge was crested at the top with three of the famous Chinese Linking Rings, the secret of which has never been broken by an inquiring layperson, despite the fact that they have been performed in public for many years. To the person wearing the badge, the rings were a significant symbol of their desire to maintain secrecy about their magic and thus preserve the most fascinating of entertainments for future generations.

The Otago Magic Circle is a society of magical entertainers and enthusiasts who gather monthly to perform and share magical knowledge with other magicians.

The history of the Circle began when a group of sixteen Dunedin people met early in 1957, determined to provide themselves with a meeting forum where they could discuss their (magic) secrets in private and associate themselves to help encourage and assist individuals with interests in the theory, practice, promotion and advancement of magic. Despite the failure of earlier attempts to revive the pre-war Otago Magical Society, they persevered with their efforts and on the 20th March 1957, the Otago Magic Circle came into being.

Once the Circle was established, its members took certain precautions to ensure that their secrets - which are practical rather than symbolical - would not indiscriminately be exposed and magic thus robbed of its mystical cloak and entertainment value.

Contrary to popular belief, the Circle does not exist to teach people magic; it is, in fact, a society of proved magicians. The society is therefore open to persons possessing practical and/or theoretical knowledge of magic and its allied arts.

In 2008, the membership of the club is still strong with a current roll of 18 members. Monthly meetings are held at member’s homes on the second Monday of each month and any person wishing to attend a club meeting, with the intention of joining, should be made aware that a performance of magical abilities must be performed. Visiting or out-of-town magicians are most welcome to attend a monthly meeting but in both cases, contact with the club secretary should be made before attending.

The club is continually looking for new members so if you perform or use magic to entertain then please make contact with the club secretary at: OMC contact
